We had Steve visit our property to tour and provide recommendations on what we can do to improve the habitat for wildlife. We walked the property and he explained what we had as far as trees and undergrowth. He also advised us on deer bedding/food plots. After the visit I had him come up twice to do some bedding work. We hinged trees and created deer beds. We also worked on some border cover and created a staging area. He really knew where to install the beds and what type of terrain the deer prefer to bed in. He also recommended we timber a small percentage of trees. He did a lot of work to sell the timber. The quantity was so small that most loggers did not want the job. He did find a logger that bought the timber at a decent price. This provides us with the funds to install two food plots. I am still working with Steve and will continue to do so until we meet our goals for the property. He is an honest and knowledgeable forester.

In a search to find a Technical Service Provider to complete a Forest Stewardship Plan on my property, I quickly realized that many foresters having experience with this program were reluctant to become involved in this Program. I contacted Steve Chilcote by phone and left a message as to my interest. He returned my call timely and agreed to perform a Plan. He also agreed to try and complete it for a cost close to the NRCS reimbursement grant I was awarded.

I was very pleased with Steve’s patience, knowledge of the program, courtesy, and he always returned communications promptly. He lived approximately 2 hours away from my property and did not let that deter him from site visits. He even stayed in town overnight to complete his field work. He utilized computer and GIS tools for completing the Plan, but he did not substitute these tools for the necessary field work; he walked every inch of the property, some of it several times over a period of 5 days. His desire to improve my forest land, as well as the non-forest land was evident. We worked together to include my goals into his Plan.

He ended up arriving as a contractor but left a friend.

Just finished hunting 4 days straight. Saturday is my last day. Saw 16 doe, 4 buck on Monday. Two were shooters. One was out 60yds nose to the ground. I grunted but he kept going. The other shooter was bedded beside the big plot with a doe. Jumped them at 20 yds when I switched stands for lunch. Tuesday saw a doe and a scrub buck. Wednesday saw what used to be an 8pt but had every single point broke off. Today I was skunked. On my trailcams i got some nice bucks as well. So overall even though I haven’t killed one I saw the most deer I have ever seen. I used to see 2 or 3 deer per hunting day, now I see 15 to 20.Your work is paying off.
